RE: [suse-amd64] big machine
Hi Steve, I have been using the Tyan dual opteron for a while along with some IBM's running 32/64 bit modes, usually SLES 9 not pro 9.2 though. They have a larger model -- http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8qspro.html http://www.iwillusa.com/products/ProductDetail.asp?vID=192 These two boards have the processor/memory you require. The price of the CPU's are substantially more than a dual processor configuration, as you move up to the 854 processor. You ask what else to consider. Can you describe the application flow in more detail? Can you talk about what storage architecture you intend on using. We're thinking about something with 4 processors and 16 or 32GB RAM. Are there any motherboards and/or configurations that we need to be careful to avoid because they won't work with SuSE 9.2? Any other tips on selecting a big machine? The machine will be running EDA jobs (sometimes concurrently, but only a few at once), each reading in a ton of data and manipulating it in memory, then writing it back out. SuSE 9.2; Athlon FX-53, SK8N mobo, Intel Etherexpress Pro 100, sound and on board NIC disabled in BIOS, PS/2 KB and M. Vanilla 80 GB Maxtor HDD and Plextor ATA DVD/CD-RW. Finally got an install and reboot after removing the SCSI (Adaptec 29160). Tried YOU - several times the machine downloaded the patch list, began downloading the patches, and then either froze or auto-rebooted. Anyone else have this issue? Any successful work arounds or ideas to look at? melissa

Disable the YOU patches after install unless you KNOW you really need them ?
Hi! I have had similar problems till sunday. I have used XFS as Filesystem and YOU seems to have problems with it, further my boot-partition was a little small (about 16 to 20 MB) and this makes YOU unable to install kernel-patches. On Sunday (after my last YOU-Update) my whole system was chrashed. So I have decided to get my data out of it and install 9.2 new, this time with ext3-FS. Now it works. Martin Am Dienstag, 7.
