Hi Steve, I have been using the Tyan dual opteron for a while along with some IBM's running 32/64 bit modes, usually SLES 9 not pro 9.2 though. They have a larger model -- http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8qspro.html http://www.iwillusa.com/products/ProductDetail.asp?vID=192 These two boards have the processor/memory you require. The price of the CPU's are substantially more than a dual processor configuration, as you move up to the 854 processor. You ask what else to consider. Can you describe the application flow in more detail? Can you talk about what storage architecture you intend on using. We're thinking about something with 4 processors and 16 or 32GB RAM. Are there any motherboards and/or configurations that we need to be careful to avoid because they won't work with SuSE 9.2? Any other tips on selecting a big machine? The machine will be running EDA jobs (sometimes concurrently, but only a few at once), each reading in a ton of data and manipulating it in memory, then writing it back out.
