Motherboard & SuSE 9.1
Hi, I'm looking for a fully supported by SuSE 9.1 Athlon 64 (socket 754) motherboard, my latest http://hardwaredb.suse.de/ search provided only three "unknown status" results, the database is likely out of date. Thanks for any suggestion and/or experience report. I'd like to avoid binary only drivers (no tainted kernel thanks :) and if possible gigabit internet. Laurent

I tried an Aopen AK-86N w/ the VIA Chipset and a Realtek GigE.... I've been having trouble getting it installed, but none of the problems are due to hardware problems that I can tell. - Kevin

I'm currently running SuSE 9.1 Pro x86_64 on an MSI K8T Neo-FSR using the VIA-K8T800 chipset. So far SuSE has been rock solid. Thinking about installing Fedora as well, but not sure yet. But I have yet to have any problems.. -Jason
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe is working well for me. I am using the onboard LAN as well as the sound without any problems. --Mark On Friday 25 June 2004 06:27 pm, Laurent GUERBY wrote:

Not sure I was clear, I'd like to _have_ gigabit ethernet :). Thanks to those who responded, so far: ASUS K8V SE Deluxe => ok (gigabit, 125 euros) MSI K8T Neo-FSR => ok (no gigabit, 110 euros) Aopen AK-86N => ok (no gigabit, not found on my web sites) Here is a list of socket 754 motherboards I assembled, may be people can complete if they own one of these: ABIT KV8 / KV8 Pro / KV8-MAX3 AOpen AK86-L / AK89-L / AK89 Max / AK89-N ASRock K8S8X ASUS K8V / K8V Deluxe Biostar K8NHA Pro Chaintech VNF3-250 / ZNF3-150 / ZNF3-250Gb Pro / SK8T800 EPoX 8HDA3+ / 8KDA3+ Gigabyte K8VT800 / K8VT800 Pro / K8NS / K8N / K8NS Pro / K8VNXP / K8NNXP / K8NSNXP MSI K8N Neo-Platinum / K8T Neo-FIS2R Soltek K8AV2-RL Experience with Althon 64 Barebones and SuSE 9.1 would also be appreciated :) Hope this helps, Laurent
Gigabyte K8VT800 / K8VT800 Pro / K8NS / K8N / K8NS Pro / K8VNXP / K8NNXP / K8NSNXP
Experience with Althon 64 Barebones and SuSE 9.1 would also be appreciated :)
I have a K8VT800 Pro running and everything works fine (Cool'n'Quiet, Sound, Lan, USB) but I don't know, if SATA is working, because I don't have a SATA device. Moritz

That's mine, it all works (SuSE 9.1) except for the Cool'n'Quit and or speed stepping. But then, running seti this would not kick in anyway. But I expect aopen will release a BIOS update or the kernel gods will find a way to get it to work. BB, Arjen

Hi, does anybody have some experience with a Tyan S2882 (dual Opteron)? My machines crash sistematically when I run large calculations. Thanks for any suggestion and/or experience report. Davide

I have a very similar s2885.

I had stability issues early on. Mine problems were solved by doing two things: updating the BIOS and replacing some faulty RAM. If you do nothing else, test your ram mercilessly. Run memtest86 overnight (or over the weekend) with the extended tests enabled. The dram timing on these (maybe most) Opteron boards is very demanding. This is compunded by Tyan not allowing the user to change the timing and simultaneously getting them wrong in some configurations. The maker of my dram vendor (OCZ) ended up changing the SPF and switching to different PLL's before they became reliable.
