Re: [suse-amd64] screen out of sync
Please answer to the list suse-amd64@suse.com, and not to me personally. Others might have a better answer, and you might not make it through my spam filter. On Thursday 23 September 2004 15:27, Luis Jose Maia Amoreira wrote:
Hi, thanks for your suggestion. I also already tried the manual instalation procedure. Now I have a nice text screen, without any white stripes, but still my X screen's resolution degrades to 1024x768.
Well, you need to set the resolution. As far as I remember nvidia asks you to run sax2 at the end of the process. One thing you do there (in sax2) is to adjust the resolution. Start sax2, click on "color and resolution". On the next screen click on "properties". Then click the tab "Resolutions..." Select your resolution. If it is not there, then click the tab "Experts" and add it there. Worked fine for me to add 1200x800 for my notebook. (It does not set the resolution for the console, of course)
The nvidia driver is the 6111 version, but my kernel is still 2.6.5-7. I'm willing to try a kotd,
Try setting your resolution *first*, before you attack the kernel. You have to do this anyway, with any kernel. Only if the problem comes back (I understand you do not have it any more currently) after you did set the correct resolution, then it seems to be time to try the later kernels.
but (sigh, this is embarrassing) I can't find a kernel download link in SuSe's site or in YOU! So, I don't know how to get a new kernel. Can you help me please?
There was a link here on this list, I think posted by one of the friendly SuSE guys here on the list. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/x86_64/HEAD/ But again, you might not need it :-) HTH, Matt

Check which version of the nvidia driver YOU did install for you? If it is not 6111 (but older, such as 6106 etc.) then I recommend to manually download and install the nvidia driver version 6111 (or later, if there is a new one.)
The problem went away for me when I did that.
However I have not tested it with a kernel version < 2.6.7. Now I'm using one of SuSE's kotd, which are 2.6.8 kernels.
You need to have the kernel sources installed for the kernel you are using in order to manually install (compile) the nvidia driver.
On the nvidia site there is a readme for the manual install of the driver on SuSE, I did follow it, it was easy, and it worked fine.
