I never got as far as completing the installation (i.e. no root password was entered, no additional users were added, etc). So I was not able to perform YOU update.
The boot CD was created using the boot.iso/9.3-x86-64-Network-Installation.iso.
No, during installation the SMP-kernel gets installed, this one doesn't work. The only way to be able to download and install the updated smp-kernel is to select the 'kernel-default' during installation (deselect kernel-smp), Then you can _download_ (YOU won't let you choose the SMP-kernel AFAIK) the updated smp-kernel and install it.
Thank you for the suggestion. I have managed to install Suse 9.3 on AMD dual-core CPU using the suggestions above: 1) perform minimal installation (not needed, but quick), and manually un-check smp kernel and install the default-kernel instead, 2) proceed with the installation. Once finished, install the newest SMP kernel (from the update) directory. I also had to install irqbalance as it was needed by the SMP kernel. Once I reboot, the kernel sees 2 CPUs as expected: dual [4:39pm]>cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 43 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ stepping : 1 cpu MHz : 1808.363 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings : 2 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht pni syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt lm 3dnowext 3dnow pni lahf_lm cmp_legacy bogomips : 4374.52 TLB size : 1024 4K pages clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts fid vid ttp cpu cores : 2 processor : 1 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 43 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ stepping : 1 cpu MHz : 1808.363 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings : 2 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht pni syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt lm 3dnowext 3dnow pni lahf_lm cmp_legacy bogomips : 3579.15 TLB size : 1024 4K pages clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts fid vid ttp cpu cores : 2 again, thank you for the help.
