Yesterday the server wouldn't respond to ping or accept new connections for about 25-30 minutes. The server was up and running but for some reason the NIC decided it didn't want to communicate for a while then it came back. Our server monitors reported the downtime.
Anyone know why this occurred?
There has been some recent updates to the e1000 driver in recent kernels as there seemed to be known problems. In the last week there was a post from someone at Intel, I think passing on an update for the e1000 and in response to another question about the e10000, he said they were concentrating on the e1000 before moving on. I didn't follow the post on the kernel mailing list that closely as I don't have this hardware. Possibly a new kernel, even as a test will give clues. Nothing in /var/log/messages to do with network stalls? Regards Sid.
There is a recent thread that may be interesting to watch...... http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0508.1/index.html Subject is "e1000 6.0.60 problems", looks like they are having a hard time.
