I am unsure what the first statement means
"HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument", do you?
I tested the speeds with hdparm -Tt /dev/hda and got

The HDD is Seagate Baracude, 250Gb, 7200 RPM. Does
this look alright to you? Suggestions for improvement?

I run SUSE 9.3 on an AMD64 processor and ASUS A8N-E motherboard with 1 GB RAM memory on it. The performance in terms of computation is fairly ok but I am disappointed in the overall user-speed. E.g. KDE starts up fairly slow (say 30-40 seconds) and most other applications start up considerably slower

Sounds to me like maybe your hard drive is not running in UDMA mode? What does hdparm tell you?
