I described in January how my Gigabit k8T-whatever motherboard would hang all the time on the Linux 2.4.21 kernel that came with SuSE 9.0. So I built my own 2.6.1 kernel, which is very stable. Sure, it doesn't quite go with SuSE 9.0 and I had to manually configure all my devices --- but that's better than crashing all the time.
With all the talk of 3-D graphics cards, I tried installing an nVidia GeForce 5200 video card. It works in 2-D out of the box of course, but the 3-D had to be downloaded from nVidia.
The nVidia driver, will compile itself for your specific kernel. Unfortunately, the driver only works on the following kernels: 2.4.x for i386 or x86_64 2.6.x for i386 ONLY It informed me that it didn't work for my 2.6.1 kernel.
Maybe the 2.4.21 kernel has had some bugfixes that would make it work with my mobo. I downloaded the latest (2.4.21-209) and tried it. No luck... it hung after about 20 minutes during a period of high disk activity, just like in the good 'ole days before 2.6.1
I guess I'll just have to wait until the 2.6 kernel is officially supported by SuSE 9.1, and nVidia has brought out drivers for it.
I just tried the same thing for my rig with the 2.6.3 kernel and it complained bitterly. I figured I just had something set up wrong and was going to get back to trying something else. Thank you for letting me know it won't work! Maybe in 6 to 10 months we can try again. I don't need 3D graphics, but having the right driver will make the system smoother anyway.
