Akonadi when starting up recalls: please remember to set a root
password for the Mariadb root user!

So what is best practice? Set it or not. That referred to usage
local with kontact / kmail /akonadi. And if one should set it: why
did I never hear of it or read of it.

As root:

# mysql_secure_installation
This is weird.
I did not set one but:

Enter current password for root (enter for none):
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/run/ mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

with empty root password. With the root password of the machine the
same. So, does this mean opensuse does set a random root password to
mysql?

No, it should be just empty.
