I am unclear as to your point.

perhaps you'd perform a test for me.

bring up your system again from boot but in text mode not GUI mode.

Log in as a regular user.
run the 'end' command ad save it to a file.

Now do, in turn, each of "su" and and "su -" at the user level prompt.

Do you get asked for the password?

in each case, once again run the "env" command and again save to a separate file
for each instance.

Now do side-by-side "diff" (see the man page on this, and you might consider
using "diff3") between the files.


Please try reconciling that with what you find when you read the man page for
"su".


Let me -- or rather the list - know what you observe and what you conclude.

Pl3ase note: there is no 'under the hood, looking at source code, disassembling,
running 'strace' involved in any of this.
