Absolutely not nice, and an argument against systemd.

Not so!
The generator is a 'backwards compatibility' compromise.

fstab semantic under systemd is *NOT* backward compatible. This is
permanent source of complaints which are ignored.

I did not say it was 'compatable', I said it was a comparability compromise.
Like all compromises it not 'absolutely the same'.
