Yes, rsync can save "generations" of a file.

From the man page

I would suggest that the suffix be altered on each run so that it is
different for each run. The date/time is probably the best.

Something like

date +"%Y%m%d%H%M%S"

or perhaps

date +"%Y%m%d%H%M%S%s"
