I will suppose that you do use USB for the connection of the UPS.
The package you need is apcupsd.
You have to set the apcups app to be started in automatic with kde (you do
that in systemsettings -
startup).
That is all, it is quite easy once you know why it does not work out of box
:-)

Thanks to all who replied. The software is installed and working. I
started /usr/sbin/apcupsd
as root. I'm not sure how to access systemsettings - startup under kde
(which I'm using).

Nice to know it worked.

For systemsettings (I suppose you use KDE4) you may go here to get a hint:

https://userbase.kde.org/System_Settings/Startup_and_Shutdown/en

You need startup and shutdown.

Just put in the name of the program, if you wish the path (in commands).
A particularity is, when you do so, recall to go in advanced and choose: send
to system-tray at startup.
That avoids in my experience a multiplication of the instances of the
application on the desktop.
It may however be that you get two icons.
They have different functions, you may hide one of them (look in the settings
of the tray, you just need to uncheck
a tick in the list of visible apps).
As this is a personal decision I cannot advice you on that.
