conclusion : when plugged into usb hub one cannot mount this external
usb HD

...................

If you do not have a self powered hub it will not work as the USB connection on the PC cannot supply enough powe for both the hub and disk. I have had this problem in the past and now only usb a USB hub that has it's own power supply.
