A long long time ago[1] the way cron handled system tasks was more

Agreed, its a mess, and getting messier with each release as layers of
indirection are piled on and more and more stuff is percolated up into
shell arguments and environmentals that are undocumented anywhere.

To be fair, Cron was always a bit of a hairbrained scheme of arcane
coding syntax, which most people used so infrequently they had to reach
for the man page every time they tried to schedule something.

Then Kcron came around which was somewhat less obtuse (but only slightly).

Now, its a total mystery how system cronjobs are started, or when they are
started.
