Well, time is money indeed. Not following the procedure means that they
have to invest more time to process your request. The instructions are
detailed to the point of telling you how to package the disk to avoid
damage to the unit. If it is damaged in transit to them, and you did not
properly protect it, they can very well refuse or charge you the expenses.

All that is very sensible.

They do provide a testing software that Linux users can use (others only
provide a Windows program, or none at all), but being a CD you can not
write files. And being MsDOS, it knows nothing about usb sticks. Yes,
they should improve this.

I don't know if one could build his own test r/w media somehow.
