That's the first thing you need to decide.

And another thing: in order to even consider setting up a raid, you
must have the hardware for a full backup of the raid. If you don't,
better use the extra disk not used on the raid for backup instead.

Meaning: if you are going to setup a mirror of 2 disks, buy 3. Two for
the mirror, another for the backup. If you can only afford 2 disks,
then use 1 disk normally, no raid, and the other for off-line backup.

Why? Because raid is no substitute for backup, and only covers one
type of failure. People that set up a raid supposedly value their data
a lot, but raid alone does not protect your data, and gives a false
sense of security...
