no desktop environment at all; PulseAudio with pavucontrol et.al.,
using it since 11.4.

Your recommendation gave a big improvement here; both me and my
colleagues very much appreciate it.

PS: This reminds me that I haven't had proper sound device access
support since systemd-logind was introduced. According to
http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/the-biggest-myths.html
myth #22, everything should be controllable from the command line.
Maybe I should inquire how to start a new systemd seat from the
command line... ;-) But then, probably I will be educated that I'm
not supposed to start X from a command line. Because, we all know,
command lines are evil... :-/
