You've hit the nail on the head here, because so much of Linux recommendations
are from the day when that was the rule.

Splitting things out onto separate partitions wasn't a problem, because
the disk sizes available pretty much required it anyway. LVM's principal
reason for existence is to get around the small disk problem.

It will be interesting to see how this changes over the next decade
when everyone has terabyte drives filled with mostly empty space.
