Without SAX2, it seems manually editing modelines is necessary.

Since XFree86 was replaced by Xorg, tools like cvt or gtf or http://www.arachnoid.com/modelines/ or http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl for editing (manually configuring) modelines have *never* been necessary here on my many multiboot systems and their many different CRT and LCD displays.

Xorg, given valid EDID or display specs via config file, is smart enough 99.9999% of the time to auto-generate acceptable modelines.
