i915? But video is i845, will that work?

I expect so. I wouldn't be surprised if most workarounds for i915
troubles are necessitated at least in part by the derelict 845G.

I'll try on next reboot.

If it doesn't, try what I do by default (nice to know whether it
works or not):

In ~/.bashrc

setterm -blank 59 -store

Ah, that was the setting for text mode. I had forgotten that command.
The manual says that APM is used if available. I tried "setterm -blank
poke", no go.

The thing is, I certainly prefer the display to be off, since this
machine I handle via ssh and leave it running to download big things,
with main computer off. Display off saves some power on the ancient
power supply, and spares the probably old fluorescent tubes that light
it up.

But the thing does not recover! :-(

Somewhere in /etc/xorg.co* I also do:

Option "DPS" "off"

Yes, that one I knew. It should be DPMS, though.

Then again, I'm not a laptop user, except for one infrequently
used antique with r128.
