That explains it.. there are two possibilities here:

a) In the last round of updates, you got a buggy kernel update with a
regression or ..

b) if there was no kernel update, your system's RAM is likely broken, to
discard this possibility run memtest.

It seems to be indeed my system RAM.
Ran the memtest and it remained stuck at test 5 telling me that it found :
"Unexpected Interrupt-Halting". Do not know what that exactly means and what
has gone bad.
Memory or the main board? What to do next to find the precise reason of the
segfaulting?
