So what went wrong?

I change it to
mkdir /home2
cp -a /home/lynn /home2

-a means archive.

No no. -a means all. The whole damn lot. dot files, permissions, owners. The lot!

You should think about -p -- preserves mode, ownership, timestamps
and you should think about an option that is recursive (-r)
and you should think about an option that preserves the "dot" files

That is why I use rsync and not cp
