i can do w/o desktop effects, but i'd like to adjust contrast / gamma on one

(2) monitors, which the nouevo driver can't do.

Whenever you go to a kernel version outside the supported repository, you need
to compile the proprietary driver yourself. Not difficult. Available at
Nvidia site, with instructions for openSUSE.
