Are you using 11.0 or 11.1 - KDE or GNOME?

Easier than than,

Just edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (as root) and copy and paste the following
in as
the Monitor section:

Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"
DisplaySize 475 295
HorizSync 30-66
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "1680X1050@60HZ-whocares"
Option "DPMS"
Option "PreferredMode" "1680x1050"
VendorName "--> LCD-whocares"
VertRefresh 50-61
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

** Yes, you really can edit your xorg.conf by hand...and the lines with
'whocares' in them above are just labels that don't affect the display.

That should get you close enough to start X in 1680x1050 on a 22" lcd
display. Also, if you need a modeline (outdated, but still used in some cases)
gtf is your friend. Usage:

gtf h-resolution v-resolution refresh [-v|--verbose] [-f|--fbmode] [-x|--
xorgmode]

Example:

13:01 archangel:/mnt/ecs/etc/X11> gtf 1680 1050 60

# 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087
-HSync +Vsync

You can also get a working xorg.conf by typing (as root) in a konsole
or
xterm

sax2

-or- if you are using a specific module (nvidia or fglrx)

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia

-or-

sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx

** where 0 is your first display. If you have 2 video cards, card 1-nvidia,
card 2-fglrx, then

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia,1=fglrx

One of those is bound to work... Good luck!
