What is the meaning of nil in hosts as:

1270.0.1 nil

in place of localhost?

"nil" means that the variable holding the hostname (in this case "localhost")
hasn't been initialized. It's a bug, somewhere. Report it, and include
anything special you did when installing your system in your bug report

oh!! installed when 11.1 was released, way to old to know what happened

The date of the file, is consistent with install date, or later? It might be interesting, unless you have editted it recently while investigating this bug.
