That's unlikely to work,

At least not with VMWare or VirtualBox.

However, QEmu and KVM both support a disk image type of "raw" which is
really just plain old disk image as created by dd or other "stupid" tools.

I'm pretty sure Xen doesn't do any adorning of the images by default,
either.
