Have a look at shred - 'man shred' will explain how to use it...


LOTS of caveats there.

Most data which is that valuable is also being kept on
journaled filesystems and probably RAID, too...both of
which violate shred's assumptions.


I thought the discussion was about disposing of old hard drives. Data retained in a live system is not relevant to the point.
