There is no proof yet that the hardware is broken, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure. I would try smartctl.

If he's been having trouble reading from it, and it can't
be attributed to the controller or the cable, then the
disk is, by definition, unreliable.

And it it's unreliable, it's smart (from both a convenience
and an economic point of view) to replace the drive within a
few days (i.e. search for a new drive, buy it, and swap the
drives at a convenient time -- the alternative is waiting for
the drive to completely fail, and then rushing out at the
last minute to grab whatever drive he can find, and losing
all the data on the drive--at the price of whatever it cost
in both time and wages to accumulate/produce that data).
