Now, I wonder if two disks is faster than a single disk :-?

Definitely faster. In big disk arrays they talk about i/o's per
spindle. The more spindles, the more i/o's. (But raid5, etc. can
require more than one i/o per write, so you have to be careful)

A raid 0 has no extra overhead, so with 2 disks it should be twice as
fast as a single disk.

But also twice as likely to die!!!

But if the 1 TBs are actually twice (or more) as likely to die as a
500GB than it all works out.

FYI: I have used about 15 of the 1 TB drives in our lab. Zero
failures to date, so to my personal knowledge they are fine.
