I just started getting this message "No space left on device" although
df indicates there is about 40 GB free on the device. It's a reiser file
system on a Suse 10.3 system (the file system was originally created
under 9.2 if that matters). Does anybody know what this means?

At the time I was actually doing operations that free space -
compressing files with gzip.

I've taken the filesystem offline and am running reiserfsck --check
It started at 11:50 and it now (13:40) says:

Checking internal tree.. \/ 1 (of 9|/ 67 (of 170-/ 30 (of 161|/135
(of 149\

Am I correct in suspecting this means it's going to take a very long
time to run?

Cheers, Dave

What is the exact diagnostic message?
And what is the output of df -H?
