Garbage? This looks not promising.

??? Looks like the kernel can't cope? (but I'm not a USB-guy). Did
the usb-device come with a CD with kernel modules/drivers?

That is a possibility. Does it work in another OS? Another PC? It's
small, so you could easily take it to a friend to try.

Maybe there are more knowledgeable people around here with better
advice.
