YaST uses /usr/bin/checkmedia, which indeed uses md5sum.

In /usr/share/doc/packages/checkmedia/README you can find the differences
between checkmedia and a plain md5sum (basically, the 'real' md5sum is stored
there, but checkmedia reads it as 0 for the purposes of calculating the
checksum, then goes back and compares with the value actually stored there to
see if it is correct)
