You can force SuSE to install as a 32-bit OS (I have not done this, but we
have done some of it in the lab).

But, there are gcc options to tell it to build 32-bit code. Look under the
i386 and x86-64 Options, such as -m32 and -march= and -b options. Look also
at:
"Specifying Target Machine and Compiler Version".
