Any program that is capable of producing sound through other means than
artsd will still be able to do that of course. noatun will not, it is
highly dependent on artsd. amarok can be configured to use other things, so
that will still work. Non-KDE programs will not be affected


As they said in the Bauhaus: less is more...

I have my boxes set up to disable artsd if inactive for 5 seconds. Control Center --> Sound & Multimedia --> Sound System --> Autosuspend, there it gives an explanation of what happens and artsd gets started again when it's needed.
