I use kylix 3 open edition

kernel-default-2.6.8-24.11 works
xorg-x11-6.8.1-15.4 works (but 6.8.2 does *not* work!)
kde-3.4.0-rc1 works

A few things that might help:
- delete ~/.kderc
- as Francesco already wrote: export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=...
various values are possible
(google for kylix and LD_ASSUME_KERNEL)
- install the web core fonts (http://corefonts.sf.net/)
(but skip verdana!)

Another source worth exploring is: http://unvclx.sf.net/.

Cheers,

Leen
