USB CD Writer not working

Just got a brand new external CDRW (Gericom enclosure see below for model)
and it doesnt work.
Its connected to my firewire port.
I tried writing just two (wav) tracks to a CD and it crashes out with the
same error:

Not much in /var/log/messages other than this. It crashed out so I dont
know exactly how it tallies sorry. I did turn it off/on a few times though
(as you can see).

Any help would be appreciated!
