~From your brief description, the system appears to be shutting down in
an orderly fashion. The first place to look for clues is
/var/log/messages. Have you looked there yet?

Also, because this is a laptop, I'd say another area worth investigating
is ACPI (formerly APM). Could the system be suspending or shutting down
due to keyboard/touchpad/mouse inactivity?

DVD/CD writers use a lot of power, too. Is the system plugged into an
outside power source when this happens? Or are you writing the DVD on
battery alone?

I think it's possible the "cache problem" error you're seeing may be a
byproduct of the write session being interrupted.
