Did something get set up wrong? I su'd to root, acpid doesn't exist in that
directory. powersave -status shows normal...

try checking the status of acpi and powersave damons when it happens - eg

open konsole (or gconsole, or ctrl+alt+f2)

login as root

/etc/init.d/acpid status
/etc/init.d/powersave status

and print the results
