Considering the error, I'm prepared to put money on bad blocks on the drive.

My advise is still to find some diagnostic utility suitable for the particular
make of drive you have, and run it. I'm pretty sure it will tell you what's
happened, and - if you're lucky - fix it.

If you can read /var/log/messages on that system, I think you'll find a lot of
error messages relating to the I/O error as well
