Tech Tip 2.4 to 2.6 safely

If you're setting up systems to run the 2.4 kernel now but plan to
make a 2.6 upgrade in the future, be sure to avoid a nail-biting
upgrade by making a double-sized root or /boot partition now. That way
you'll have space for both kernels and the associated modules without
having to do a scary upgrade where you remove the running kernel
before there's a bootable replacement.
