I am quite satisfied with barcode (barcode-0.96-38 in SuSE 7.3)
Works great for printing DLT tape labels.
The actual command I am using is:

barcode -i labels.txt -e 39 -c -t 3x10+.5+.5 -m 37,15 -u in -p 8.5x11in | a2ps -1

where file labels.txt contains strings to be bar-coded (like DD2034)
