I suggest you give Xine a try. The following RPM work out-of-the-box:

You shouldn't need anything else than the RPM provided there (precompiled
for i586, i686 and k6 architectures). I've used them version after version
for months, no problem (SuSE 7.3, 8.0) for DVD, Mpeg, DivX and some Sorenson
video codecs (unfortunately not Sorenson 3).

If you really want MPlayer, I found one compiled for SuSE here :

It worked, but not perfectly (something to do with fonts).
