Well, I can connect to both www.sun.com and wwws.sun.com both using telnet to
port 80 and a web browser, so there's nothing inherently wrong in the
software.

Connection refused makes me wonder if you're forgetting to add the "80" to the
telnet string?

Another thought: which ip do you get for wwws.sun.com if you do "host
wwws.sun.com"? I get 207.240.115.77 but when I actually telnet it's using
128.11.159.113. Presumably the load balancer at work.
