AFAIK...

.2 is a specific version number of the library. If a program just wants
to link against any version of libXm, it will reference libXm, but if it
specifically wants version 2, it will use libXm.2.

You will probably find that /usr/X11R6/lib/libXm.so is a link to a
specific version, probably /usr/X11R6/lib/libXm.so.2.
