Thanks all...

Still looking at some of them, but so far nothing fits. It seems that the
messenger client must support
Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging

So far none seem to be able to connect to the IM server.

And secondly we use a version of MS instant messenger to
allow quick
communication of engineers across multiple sites. Anyone know of
something allowing me to connect to this?

Get yourself a Jabber client, such as Gabber
(gabber.sf.net), I'm pretty
sure Jabber can intercommunicate with MSN Messenger, otherwise, try
EveryBuddy (everybuddy.com) or GAIM (gaim.sf.net)

Imici (www.imici.com) has a free linux client that connects
to MSN messenger,
v. easy to set up and I've had good luck with it.
