I am getting into recompiling my kernel but the howto on the internet
seems fuzzy (not a monitor problem)

I want to backup the current kernel and rebuild it to allow IP chains,
tables, and port forwarding.

The standard SuSE kernel should include at least IP Tables and port
forwarding as standard (chains and tables might be mutually exclusive).

However, if you really need to recompile, in a nutshell...

cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make xconfig
or
make menuconfig
Do whatever changes are required
make clean
make dep
make bzlilo
make modules
make modules_install
Reboot.
