I don't think it is a NIS problem or is it the NIS on Linux.

We have hundreds of Solaris and HP boxes, and they don't have this problem.

Our NIS master and slave our on a Solaris box running Solaris 8.

It must be a limitation in NIS.
As a test I just created a user with id 999999 and it was
no problem.
