sounds like your pop server is not configured correctly. is there a # in
front of the line for pop3 in /etc/inetd.conf? look on the server and see
if there is any mail in the spool files (/var/spool/mail/username) also,
make sure qpopper is not denied access in /etc/hosts.deny and
/etc/hosts.allow
