environment variables question

I'm running SuSe 7.0, and I have it set up to boot into run level 2.
I generally log in, and then run "startx" to get a gui. What I don't
understand is how I could have a $PATH equal to something from my .profile
file, but all my gnome-terminal/xterm windows in the gui have the system
standard value of $PATH. Don't children shells inherit the parent's
environment variables?
